Brand
Casio started out making calculators. Tadao Kashio opened a workshop in Tokyo in 1946, and he and his brothers built the 14-A, a compact relay calculator, before incorporating Casio Computer in 1957. The first Casio watch, the Casiotron, arrived in November 1974 with a calendar that adjusted itself for short months. In 1981 engineer Kikuo Ibe set out to build a watch that could survive a ten-meter fall, run ten years on a battery and resist ten bar of water pressure, and the first G-Shock, the DW-5000C, went on sale in 1983. The F-91W followed in June 1989, a 21-gram resin digital whose module 593 runs for years on one coin cell. Every Casio we cover is quartz, and most have resin cases or bands. Check the photos for cracked bands and cases and faded displays, and pick a listing that shows the watch lit up and working.
