Casio · ref GW-M5610-1 · c. 2009–2021
The GW-M5610 is the square G-Shock that looks after itself. It keeps the DW-5600 shape and adds Tough Solar charging plus Multi-Band 6, which sets the time by radio from transmitters in the U.S., Germany, England, Japan and China. Casio launched it around 2009 as an update to the GW-M5600, and it has long been G-Central's top pick for a first G-Shock. The original runs module 3159, with an EL backlight that switches on by itself when you tilt the watch in the dark. In 2021 Casio quietly moved to the GW-M5610U and module 3495, with an LED light, a timer you can set to the second, and more world time zones. The outside barely changed, and Amazon in the U.S. even shipped U models against the old listing, so sellers often mix up the two names. The module number on the back tells you which you've got. Either one is a daily watch you set once and forget.
The resin strap and bezel crack with age, as on any square. A watch kept in a drawer may show a low charge and won't pick up the time signal until it has sat in the light.
Buying guide
The cheaper sellers ask $110–152 delivered for a used GW-M5610, and the $129 GW-M5610-1 with its original box and free US shipping is our pick. There are about 196 listed, most at $140–230 delivered and mostly from Japan with $20–72 shipping, and we pool the original, the U update and color versions like the BC and BA. Read the module on the caseback, 3159 for the original and 3495 for the U, ask for the charge level after a day in light and whether it has synced by radio recently, and check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page. Skip the $443 GW-M5610K-1JR from Japan, about $210 over the band.
