From across a room the GW-5000U looks like any black square. Underneath, it's built the way the 1983 original was, with a stainless steel inner case and a screw-lock caseback, both coated in DLC. It's made in Japan, and it adds Tough Solar charging and Multi-Band 6 radio time sync, so you never change a battery or set the clock. The first GW-5000 came out in 2009 as a Japan-only model and became a favorite import. In 2021 Casio updated it to the U version with module 3495, an LED light in place of the old EL panel, a timer you can set to the second, and a one-press swap between home and world time. It was also the first regular GW-5000 sold outside Japan, through Casio Europe. Fans rate its softer urethane strap over standard resin too. If you want one square to wear for decades, this is the one we'd pick.
The DLC coating can wear through at the bezel edges and caseback, and the resin parts age like any G-Shock. A watch stored in the dark can drop to a low charge, and it won't receive the time signal until it's recharged in light.
