Casio · ref DW-5600C-1V · 1987–mid 1990s
Keanu Reeves wears a DW-5600C-1V through the whole of Speed, and G-Central reports it was his own watch, not a prop. That 1994 film is why collectors in Japan still call the square the Speed model. The DW-5600C arrived in 1987 with the shape of the first G-Shock and a stainless steel inner case closed by a screw-lock caseback. It was the last basic square built that way, and it's the reason this one is collected. Casio made it with two modules, 691 from 1987 into the early 1990s and then 901, in two factories marked Japan A and Japan H. The module 691 and Japan A pieces are the rarer ones. The light is a small bulb, since G-Shock didn't get an EL backlight until 1994. Casio has run restoration services for classic squares in Japan and the U.S., which helps with tired resin. Buy it for the history and the screw-back, and wear a DW-5600E if you want a beater.
Resin from the late 1980s is often cracked, brittle or already swapped for newer parts. A battery left dead inside for years can leak and corrode the module, so a non-runner isn't always just a battery change.
Buying guide
For a screw-back square you can wear, buy one of the US listings titled working or with its original band, which ask $131–200 delivered, well under the band. There are about 74 listed and most ask $360–950 delivered, since many come from Japan with $60–270 shipping. Read DW-5600C and module 691 or 901 on the caseback, ask whether the bezel and strap are original, and check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page. Several cheaper US listings are photographed without the resin bezel, so price in a replacement on those, and skip the $1,595 yellow -9B, about $645 over the band.
