The DW-5600E is the plain black square most people picture when they hear G-Shock. It keeps the shape of the very first G-Shock, the 1983 DW-5000C, and Casio dates this version to 1996. By Casio's own count the DW-5600 is its second best-selling G-Shock ever in Japan, and in 2017 a DW5600E-1 set a Guinness record by surviving a 24.97-tonne truck rolling over it. It's also one of the G-Shocks NASA has flight-qualified for crewed spaceflight. Early units run module 1545. Casio moved to module 3229 around 2010, which pushed the auto calendar out from 2039 to 2099. Japanese-market pieces say Fox Fire on the face where international ones say Illuminator, a nod to the blue-green glow of the EL backlight. In late 2023 Casio started replacing it with the DW-5600UE, which has an LED light and longer battery life, so a used E is one of the last EL-lit squares. Buy one as a first G-Shock or a watch you'll never baby.
The resin strap and bezel crack and wear with age, usually near the lugs. The EL backlight gets dimmer after years of use, and a dead battery left inside too long can leak onto the module.

There are about 163 listed, and most ask $110–160 delivered because Japan resellers fill the search, many adding $30–60 shipping. Read DW-5600E and module 1545 or 3229 on the caseback, ask for a photo with the light on, zoom in on the resin near the lugs, and check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since cheap squares from unknown sellers get faked. Skip the $262 and $432 ones from Japan, $100–270 over the band, since an old Fox Fire label on one is the only reason given.
