Casio · ref G-9000-1 · 2006–present (U.S.)
Mud resistance is an old G-Shock idea. The 1985 DW-5500, sold as the G-Shock II, was the first model built for it, and collectors called it Mudman long before Casio made that an official series with the DW-8400 in 1995. The G-9000 replaced the DW-8400 in 2006 with a rally-inspired design. Its buttons sit behind sealed guards so mud, dust and sand can't jam them, which also makes it easier to work in gloves. Inside is module 3031, with two stopwatches, five multi-function alarms, a flash alert and an EL light that can stay on for up to five seconds. U.S. Special Operations Command bought 1,000 of them in 2014. Casio Japan dropped it around 2018, but it stayed on sale in the U.S. It's smaller than most Master of G models, so it suits anyone who wants a field G-Shock that isn't huge.
The resin bezel, button guards and strap wear and crack over time. The EL backlight dims after years of use, and a dead battery left inside can leak onto the module.
Buying guide
A plain G-9000 from a US seller asks $81–116 delivered, and the $81 one titled everything works is our pick. There are about 79 listed, most at $100–220 delivered, and we pool the color versions, so camo, Rescue orange, MX and purple ones push up the top of the band, as do Japan resellers adding $60 shipping. Ask for a short video pressing every button through its guard, read G-9000 and module 3031 on the caseback, zoom in on the button guards and strap for cracks, and check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page. Skip the $337 G-9000-1VDR from Japan, about $115 over the band for the standard black model.
