Seiko · ref SKX781 · 2000–2012
The Monster was Seiko's wild card. It first appeared in catalogs in 2000, stayed in production until 2012, and looked nothing like the tidy SKX007 sold alongside it. The orange SKX781 is the version most people picture when they say Monster, and the black SKX779 is its quieter twin. Under the toothy steel bezel and shrouded case it's very much an SKX, with the same 7S26 automatic and 200m rating. The case is about 42mm wide and 48mm lug to lug with 20mm lugs, and the lugs are drilled, so strap changes are easy. The lume on its chunky markers is famously bright, and Fratello calls the dial one of Seiko's best modern designs. Seiko followed it with three more Monster generations and even a smaller Baby Monster, so if it's the first-generation watch you want, make sure the listing is an SKX781. Most were worn every day, so expect some bezel scratches on all but the best.
Bezels collect scratches because most Monsters were daily wearers. Later Monster generations are sometimes listed loosely as Orange Monsters, so the reference matters, and an unserviced 7S26 can run well off time.
Buying guide
For a first-generation Orange Monster to wear, we'd take the US one titled "Serviced" at $381 delivered. It has a new crystal, which is fine on a watch you'll wear every day. There are about 106 for sale and most ask $420–575 delivered, mostly from Japan with $30–205 shipping on top. Make sure the listing says SKX781 and the caseback reads 7S26-0350, since later Monster generations get listed under the same name, and check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, because eBay's search cards don't show them.
