Seiko · ref SRP777 · 2016 on (later SRPE93)
The SRP777 brought the Turtle back. Seiko announced it in late 2015 and put it on sale in 2016, close to 30 years after the original 6309 ended, and the black version later carried on under the reference SRPE93. The cushion case is about 44.3mm wide with 22mm lugs, close to the original but a little taller, and now it has drilled lugs for easy strap changes. Water resistance went up to 200m. Inside is the 4R36, a 24-jewel automatic that hand-winds and hacks, so it's easier to set than the old 6309. A few details changed. The lume dot on the seconds hand moved to the counterweight, and the dial gained a Prospex logo that some collectors still grumble about. Watch writer Jack Forster said the Turtle seemed to come from an alternate universe where the Quartz Crisis never happened. If you want the Turtle shape on a watch you can wear hard every day, this is the easy choice.
Bezel alignment is the familiar complaint, with plenty of Seikos whose bezel pip doesn't sit exactly at 12. The Hardlex crystal scratches more easily than sapphire, and some owners find the bezel grip less crisp than on the vintage originals.
Buying guide
For a modern Turtle, we'd buy the US one with its original strap at $420 delivered, about $330 under anything else listed. Only about 6 are for sale, and the rest ask $750–875 delivered, mostly J1 Made in Japan versions with $100–170 shipping from Japan, so the band isn't much of a market read; the same black Turtle also sells as the SRPE93. Check in the photos that the bezel pip lines up at 12 and look for scratches on the Hardlex crystal. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page too, since eBay's search cards don't show them.
$420.00delivered
The only SRP777 listed in the US, with its original strap, at $420 delivered and no shipping charge. That's about $330 under the Japan listings, so ask for a timing check and a bezel photo, then make an offer.
