Seiko · ref SKX173
The SKX173 is the US-market version of the SKX007, and some collectors think it's the better-looking one. Fratello describes it as made in Malaysia with the same specs as the 007, but with a reworked dial and handset. The hour markers mix longer and shorter rectangles, much like the earlier 7002, and there's a small lume marker next to the day-date window where the 007 has none. That little detail means the 173 still meets the 2018 update to ISO 6425, which asks for a lume marker at every hour, and the 007 doesn't. The seconds hand carries its lume dot near the tip, like the old 6309, instead of on the counterweight. Everything else, from the 200m case to the 7S26 automatic, matches the 007. Owners describe buying them new in the early 2000s, and Fratello found good ones cheaper than comparable 007s. If you want an SKX that looks a little more vintage and turns up less often, start here.
Swapped hands, bezels and inserts are the main concern, since the 173 takes the same parts as any SKX and owners change them freely. Otherwise it shares the 007's 7S26 and the same need for a service after years of wear.
Buying guide
For a stock SKX173 we'd start with the US one dated May 2000 at $271 delivered, and ask when it was last serviced. There are only about 10 for sale, most asking $300–480 delivered, so the band is a thin read on this market. Look in the photos for the 173's mix of long and short markers, the lume plot by the day-date window and the lume dot near the tip of the seconds hand, and read the caseback, since most here say 7S26-0028 or 0029 and one titled 0020 carries the SKX007's case number. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, because eBay's search cards don't show them, and skip the $799 one on a rubber strap, which asks about $320 over the band with only a catalog title.
$270.80est. delivered
The lowest ask at $271 delivered from a US seller, dated May 2000 with a 7S26-0029 caseback, just under the $300–480 band. The title doesn't say it runs, so ask for a timing video.
