Seiko · ref SKX013 · 1990s–2019
The SKX013 is the SKX for smaller wrists. Fratello describes it as essentially an SKX007 in a smaller case, so you get the same 200m rating, screw-down crown and 7S26 automatic, along with a slightly different handset that some 007 fans don't like as much. It was sold alongside the bigger SKX models until Seiko ended the line in 2019. For years after that, Seiko had nothing at this size with the same specs. When it finally released 38mm Seiko 5 Sports models in the SKX style, Fratello called them a mid-sized SKX013 alternative, but those watches skip the screw-down crown and the 200m rating. That gap is why clean 013s are still sought after, and why they don't sell for less just because they're smaller. Like every SKX, the 013 has been modified a lot, so check that the dial, hands and bezel are original. Expect the same movement quirks as the 007, with no hand-winding and no hacking.
Modified parts are the main risk, as with every SKX. A 7S26 that's gone years without a service can run fast or slow, and the crown threads deserve a look on any watch that's been worn hard.
Buying guide
The best buys on the 38mm SKX right now are a UK seller's boxed, dated watches, May 1999 at $342 delivered and October 1997 at $356. There are about 26 for sale, and most ask $470–1,100 delivered because Japan-listed watches fill the middle and top of the range, with shipping up to $325. Check that the caseback reads 7S26-0030, compare the dial, hands and bezel with factory photos, and check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's search cards don't show them. Skip the $1,599 Japan listing, where $325 of shipping puts it about $500 over the band.
