Seiko · ref SARB035 · 2008–2018
The SARB035 is the off-white twin of the SARB033, and it's the version Monochrome singled out as carrying the most Grand Seiko DNA. Seiko released both in 2008 as Japan-market Seiko Mechanical models in its Spirit line, and announced in 2018 that they were being discontinued along with the SARB017 Alpinist. Apart from the dial, it matches the 033. You get a 38mm steel case about 11mm thick, brushed with polished sides, a sapphire crystal over the dial, a Hardlex display back and the 6R15 automatic with 23 jewels, roughly 50 hours of reserve, hacking and hand winding. The pale dial with applied markers, lume-tipped indices and polished dauphine hands reads dressier than the black one, and it looks right on a leather strap. Pick this one if you want the Grand Seiko look with a modern automatic inside. The used market is the only place left to buy one, so check the dial closely and favor listings with the full bracelet.
Early 6R15A and 6R15B movements had problems Seiko later improved, so a later-letter movement is a small plus. The Hardlex display back scratches more easily than the sapphire front.
Buying guide
We'd buy the SARB035 graded Excellent at $930 delivered from Japan, the lowest fixed price here and about $245 under the band. There are about 30 for sale and most ask $1,175–1,425 delivered, nearly all from Japan with shipping up to $350 and possible import fees, and the ones titled with a 2026 overhaul sit inside that band. Look at the off-white dial under even light for spots or haze, check the sapphire front crystal for marks, and ask whether the full bracelet comes with it. eBay's watch search doesn't show seller feedback, so check it and the return policy on the item page.
$757.09est. delivered
The lowest price on a SARB035 at $757 delivered, with box and papers, but it's an auction with no bids yet, so it will climb. We'd stop near $1,175 delivered, the bottom of the band, since a full set shipping from the US saves the Japan shipping and fees.
