Seiko · ref 5740-8000 · 1967–1975
In 1967 Seiko put its first 36,000 beats-per-hour movement into a Lord Marvel. It didn't go into a Grand Seiko or King Seiko first. The hand-wound 5740C ticks ten times a second, and Beyond the Dial notes that the Lord Marvel was only the second watch in the world to run that fast, a year after Girard-Perregaux. The Lord Marvel line dates to the late 1950s, and this 5740-8000 version was made with few changes until 1975. It's a plain, well-made dress watch with 23 jewels and no date. The silver brushed dial has applied steel batons, dauphine hands and Lord Marvel 36000 printed under the logo, all under a domed acrylic crystal, and a linen dial with Arabic numerals was also made. The case measures about 35 to 36mm depending on who's measuring, with 19mm lugs long enough to make it wear bigger. Seiko sold it in steel and gold plate. It's one of the most affordable ways to own a vintage Seiko hi-beat, and the smooth sweep of that seconds hand is the whole appeal.
The single lug bevels are delicate, and most cases have been polished at some point. Not every Lord Marvel has the hi-beat movement, so a dial without 36000 or a caliber other than 5740C is an earlier, slower model.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Lord Marvel titled working condition at $289 delivered from Japan, well under the band. There are about 179 for sale and most ask $380–525 delivered, nearly all from Japan with shipping up to $110 and possible import fees. Read the dial for Lord Marvel with 36000 under it and the case back for 5740-8000, since earlier Lord Marvels without the 36000 are slower watches, and titles that mention a date or automatic don't fit this hand-wound, no-date model. Check the lug bevels for heavy polishing, and look up each seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show it.
