Seiko · ref 4006 caliber, many case refs · 1966–1978
The Bell-Matic is Seiko's mechanical alarm watch, launched in 1966 and made until 1978, when quartz and digital alarms replaced it. Beyond the Dial's David Flett credits it as the first automatic alarm watch with a full 360-degree winding rotor. It has two barrels. The rotor winds the watch, which can't be wound by hand, and the crown winds a separate alarm spring that drives a tiny hammer against a curved sounding spring for about ten seconds. You pull out the button at 2 o'clock to arm it and set the alarm time on a rotating indicator ring with the crown. The 4006 has a day and date, and the rarer 4005 shows the date only. Most 1960s 4006-7xxx models have 27 jewels and conservative cases, and the 1970s 4006-6xxx models have 17 jewels and much wilder designs. Japan also got versions badged Business Bell. Buy one that rings, because the alarm is the reason to own it.
Bell-Matic parts are unique to the 400x movement and new ones are generally unavailable, so many watches have been rebuilt with mismatched dials, cases, indicator rings and hands. White dials often discolor toward brown.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Bell-Matic titled CLA'd, watchmaker shorthand for a clean, lube and adjust, at $246 delivered from Australia, well under the band. There are about 230 for sale and most ask $360–525 delivered, with Japan-listed ones often adding $60–120 shipping. Only one title here says the alarm works, so ask every seller for a video of it ringing, and match the jewel count to the case back, 27 for a 4006-7xxx and 17 for a 4006-6xxx, since parts are scarce and mixed dials and rings are common. eBay's watch search doesn't show seller feedback, so check it and the return policy on the item page.
$185.00delivered
The lowest fixed price on a complete Bell-Matic at $185 delivered from the US, about $175 under the band. The title doesn't say it runs or rings, so ask for a video of the alarm going off.

CLA'd vintage JDM Seiko auto Bell-Matic 4006-7001 Alarm wrist watch, April 1973
$530.00est. delivered

Vintage SEIKO BELL MATIC 4006-7001 Black Linen Dial Alarm Function Properly
$245.69est. delivered
The only one here with recent work in the title, so it should need the least. A 4006-7001 should say 27 jewels on the dial, so check the photos.
