Seiko · ref 6119 caliber, many case refs · c. 1967–mid-1970s
The 6119 is the automatic inside a huge share of Seiko 5 watches from the late 1960s into the mid-1970s, so this page covers a family of watches with one movement. The four digits before the dash on the case back are the caliber and the four after are the case design, which means a 6119-8083 and a 6119-8460 share a movement and little else. NASA flight director Gene Kranz wore a 6119-8460 through several Apollo missions. Fratello describes the 37mm 6119-8083 as a dressier cousin of Seiko's first diver, the 62MAS, with the bezel left off. The movement has 21 jewels and a day-date but can't be hand-wound and doesn't hack. On a 6119A or B you push the crown to change the date, and the 6119C added a harder push to change the day plus a second language on the day wheel. Watches made before 1970 say waterproof on the dial and case back, and later ones say water resist. There are plenty to choose from, so buy on condition and the dial you like.
Aftermarket dials and pieced-together watches are common in cheap vintage Seiko, so a perfect dial on a 50-year-old watch deserves a second look. Grey or black blotchy lume is a sign water got in at some point.
Buying guide
The one we'd buy is the blue 6119-8430 titled April 1972 and keeps time, at $158 delivered from the US. There are about 224 for sale and most ask $200–340 delivered, with serviced and Japan-listed ones at the top. This page covers many case designs with one movement, so read the four digits after 6119 on the case back to know which watch you're getting, and check that the dial and case back agree on waterproof (before 1970) or water resist (after). Redials are common in cheap vintage Seiko, so look for crisp, evenly aged dial print, and check each seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show it.
