Seiko · ref SRPD55
When Seiko relaunched Seiko 5 in 2019, it built the new range around the SKX007's case and offered 27 versions at launch. Hodinkee picked out the SRPD55K1 as the most conservative of the lot, the one that looks most like an SKX007, and the line soon picked up the nickname 5KX. You get the same 42.5mm steel case with a 46mm lug-to-lug length, a unidirectional 60-minute bezel and the crown at 4 o'clock. The changes are a display back, drilled 22mm lugs and the 4R36 movement, which hacks and hand-winds, two things the SKX's 7S26 couldn't do. The trade is water resistance. It's rated to 100 meters with a push-in crown, against the SKX007's 200 meters and screw-down crown. That's plenty for swimming, and it makes this an everyday sports watch more than a diver. Plenty are for sale in like-new condition, so pick a clean one that still has its bracelet.
Problems are rare on a watch this young. The Hardlex crystal scratches more easily than sapphire, and Worn & Wound found the bezel action a little mushy, so don't expect crisp SKX-style clicks.
Buying guide
For an SKX-style everyday watch, we'd buy new: a US seller has the SRPD55K1 for $272 delivered, only $16 more than the cheapest used one. There are about 60 for sale; used ones in the US ask about $256–311 delivered, new ones mostly $272–360, and Japan-listed watches add $60–100 shipping and mostly ask $450 or more. Pick one that still has its bracelet, look for scratches on the Hardlex crystal in the photos, and remember it's rated 100m with a push-in crown, so it isn't a 200m SKX007. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's search cards don't show them, and skip the $603 Japan listing, which asks about $210 over the band on a limited-edition claim for a regular-production watch.
$256.47est. delivered
The lowest ask at $256 delivered from a US seller, used and still on its bracelet, under the $280–390 band. Look for crystal scratches and ask for a photo of the display back.
