Seiko · ref 6105-8110 · 1970–1977
The 6105-8110 is the watch Martin Sheen wears as Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now, which is where the Willard nickname comes from. It was a working tool long before it was a movie prop. Seiko sold the 6105 through military PXs during the Vietnam War, and the Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura wore one on his expeditions. The 6105 line replaced the 62MAS in 1968 with the symmetrical 6105-8000, and the asymmetric 8110 took over around 1970 and lasted until about 1977. It was Seiko's first asymmetric case, with an integrated crown guard you can still see on today's Seiko divers. It's 44mm across with 19mm lugs and a 150m rating, and it runs a 17-jewel automatic at 21,600 beats an hour with a quick-set date and no hand-winding. The crown doesn't screw down. It pushes in and turns to lock, and an original reads LOCK with an arrow. Most for sale have been refinished or fitted with aftermarket parts, so this is the vintage Seiko to buy slowly.
Most examples have refinished or aftermarket dials, hands and bezel inserts, and a seconds hand with fresh, bright color is a common giveaway. The push-and-turn locking crown was unique to this model and needs to work properly.
Buying guide
For a Captain Willard to wear, we'd take the July 1971 one a US seller titles all original head and newly serviced, at $1,913 delivered. There are about 69 for sale and most ask $2,200–2,725 delivered, though a few US listings with running or service claims sit under that. Most 6105s have refinished or aftermarket dials, hands and inserts, so look for lume that has aged evenly across dial and hands, be wary of a bright, fresh seconds hand, and ask for a crown photo showing LOCK with an arrow and whether the push-and-turn lock works. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's search cards don't show them, and skip the $5,035 boxed Japan listing, which asks over $2,300 more than the top of the band.
$1,299.99delivered
The lowest ask on a 6105-8110 at $1,300 delivered, about $900 under the $2,200–2,725 band, titled 1971 and running. A Willard this cheap makes us look twice, so check the dial and hands closely for refinishing and confirm the serial starts with 1.
