Seiko · ref 7A28-7000
Seiko launched the 7A28 in 1983 as the first analog quartz chronograph movement, and built it like a mechanical watch, with 15 jewels, no plastic parts and a step switch that lets a watchmaker regulate it. The Royal Air Force bought more than 11,000 7A28 chronographs for its aircrew. Seiko also asked Giorgetto Giugiaro, who designed the DeLorean and the Nikon F3, to style some of them, and the result was the asymmetric Speedmaster Sports 100 series. This 7A28-7000 is the one with the pusher block jutting from the right side of the case and an inner bezel. James Cameron put it on Sigourney Weaver's wrist in Aliens (1986), which is why collectors call it the Ripley. Seiko reissued the design in 2015 as the SCED035 with a simpler 7T12 movement, so check which one you're looking at. On the original, the sub-dial at 3 o'clock steps 20 times a second while the chronograph runs, and the extra button at 10 freezes the hands for split times.
New replacement 7A28 movements are almost impossible to find, so a dead or corroded one is hard to bring back. A low battery shows as the seconds hand jumping in two-second steps.
Buying guide
We'd buy the US-listed Ripley titled original at $1,500 delivered, at the bottom of the band. There are only about 10 for sale, most asking $1,475–1,725 delivered, so the band is a loose read. Read the case back for 7A28-7000, since the 2015 SCED035 reissue looks similar but has a 7T12 and a date window at 3, and ask when the battery was changed and whether it ever leaked, because a corroded 7A28 is very hard to replace. Skip the two titled for repair or with a chronograph issue at working prices, and check each seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show it.
$1,295.96est. delivered
The lowest delivered Ripley at $1,296 from the UK, about $180 under the band. The title doesn't say it runs, so ask for a video of the chronograph and the split button, and when the battery was last changed.
